The dream of a world trip …
“I had had a long time, but there were so many reasons not to do it: my mother needed me, the children had to go to school and how was Niek in a wheelchair. He had a motorcycle accident fifteen years ago, to which he had a paraplegia. Yet we just decided to do it. After that one step went naturally.”
My biggest fear …
“Was that something would happen to Niek. That is why we consciously opted for countries with good medical care and those who are a bit wheelchair accessible. Although that was sometimes disappointing in Asia. Were there steaks everywhere. In the Netherlands we would let ourselves be stopped, now we were simply looking for solutions. Together with the children I was always prepared to get a few trees.”

In Australia …
“We drove in a sexy 4×4 with a double roof tent, which Niek himself could control with special manual operation on the pedals. He thought that crosses through the sand completely the bomb and I was relieved that I did not have to drive. The second part we drove in a small camper can. Sleep.

“Not then. We have discovered that. We have done a lot of cool things, such as canoeing in caves with glowworms, rafting and snorkeling. That was all magical. In the Netherlands there are all the rules of that kind of activities, they didn’t make it so difficult. The captain dragged Niek himself just from the water, while he was not getting a little and he also got it galed. I only did bodyboarding with the children and that sometimes made him sad, but then he enjoyed their stories afterwards. ”

Back in our house with small garden …
“I miss nature and the birds when Niek’s accident we were always aware of how short life is, but now we think even more about how we want to fill in time with our children. Maybe buy a farm, or live abroad for a while? With our book rusted – from dreams to do other people you can still have to put you off. Objections, but still … This journey has given us the feeling that we are invincible as a family. “
