At this year’s Southside Festival in Neuhausen OB ECK, the organizers are expecting a large number of visitors again: Around 65,000 people will be on the premises from June 20 to 22, 2025. In order for stable mobile phone connections to be guaranteed despite the high network utilization, Deutsche Telekom relies on temporary strengthening network supply.
A total of seven mobile antenna containers are installed in addition to the existing mobile phone systems. They are intended to collect data traffic, which is created by the expected intensive usage behavior of the festival goers: inside-for example when posting on social media, live streaming or also when replacing messages and pictures with friend: inside.
On the facts and planning at the Southside Festival
Last year, over 44,000 gigabytes of data via the Telekom mobile network were transmitted during the festival days. For this year the company expects another increase. A gigabyte corresponds to about five hours of video streaming in standard resolution.
The planning for such special supplies begins months in advance. Factors such as the terrain reform awaited visitors: Interior currents and the expected data requirement flow into the choice of location for mobile mast and containers.
Network reinforcement at over 380 events nationwide
The Southside Festival is not the only big event where Telekom upgrades in the meantime. In 2025 there are over 380 events nationwide – as many than ever – with which additional measures for network reinforcement are taken. This also includes folk festivals such as the Oktoberfest or the Hamburg harbor festival as well as sports events such as the Chio in Aachen and the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring.
The network operator also invests in the expansion away from individual events. The company currently operates 66 mobile phone locations in the Tuttlingen district. 28 more will be added in the next three years, and extensions at 27 existing locations with LTE and 5G are planned. Telekom is dependent on areas of municipalities and private owners.
