Marco Antwerp saved third division Osnabrück – and still had to go. Now his successor has been determined.
The third division club VfL Osnabrück has found a new head coach: Timo Schultz will lead the team from the coming season. The 47-year-old was introduced together with Managing Director Michael Welling and sports director Joe Enochs on Monday.
“I really feel like the task at VfL,” said Schultz. The atmosphere on the Bremen bridge was a strong argument for him: “You don’t need to think long if you have the opportunity to run up at the Bremen bridge every two weeks.”
The native East Frisian sees great potential in the club. VfL is reminiscent of FC St. Pauli “15 to 20 years ago,” said Schultz. He is not concerned with “managing two years 3rd league”.
After the separation from Marco Antwerp at the end of May, Osnabrück was looking for a new coach. Antwerp took over the team in December 2024 and led to relegation in the second half of the season. Nevertheless, the association decided against further cooperation.
“Timo Schultz fulfills our defined requirement profile both with his competence as a football teacher and human,” said Enochs. Schultz stands for a dynamic, running -intensive and offensive football with tactical flexibility and intensive pressing.
Schultz became known as the coach of FC St. Pauli, where he supervised the second division team from July 2020 to December 2022. Before that, he worked for many years in the club’s youth area. Short stations at FC Basel and 1. FC Köln followed. He was in office at the Bundesliga club from January 2024, but could not prevent the descent and had to leave the club again after the end of the season.
