Germany’s best tennis professional Alexander Zverev will also compete at the US Open in New York. In the reformed competition, the prize money of one million dollars for the pair of winners and the new mode attract numerous stars. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are also there, Zverev competes together with the Swiss Belinda Bencic. This was announced by the organizers on Tuesday.
Both of the women and men each take part in nine of the current top 10. Like Zverev in Tokyo, Bencic won the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo and is currently fighting back into the top of the world after a baby break.
“In our first conversations on how we could redesign and upgrade the Mixed Doubles Championship of the US Open, we wanted to find a way to let the best men and women in the world compete together-in a team and against each other”said Lew Sherr, CEO and managing director of the US tennis association Usta. “If you see which teams have already entered the list of participants, we are all incredibly enthusiastic.”
Nothing keeps victory and nothing of new mode
A few months ago, some double specialists who no longer get places were less enthusiastic about the announcement. “As a former US Open Mixed winner, I think it’s a shame what should become of this event. A serious competition is degraded into a short shewevent, whose counting system gains or loses more of a matter of luck than a quality feature”said Laura Siegemund the tennis magazine.
With the newly introduced mixed event, the profit of four games is enough to win a sentence. A match tie-break replaces the third set, the advantage is also no longer necessary-the next point decides if there is a stake. The field of participants is reduced from 32 to 16 mixed doubles.
Prominent pairings
In addition to Zverev/Bencic, Emma Navarro (USA) and Sinner (Italy), Jasmine Paolini (Italy) and Lorenzo Musetti (Italy), IGA Swiadek (Poland) and Caspar Ruud (Norway) as well as Emma Raducanu (Great Britain) and Alcaraz (Spain) will form a double.
The US Open will take place in New York from August 24th to September 7th. The mixed competition is scheduled to take place in front of the Grand Slam on August 19 and 20.
