After his serious accident, it was assumed that Mikhail Antonio will fail at least until autumn. But the striker already celebrated his return to the square.

This comeback was a very special one. Striker Mikhail Antonio has returned on the pitch for the first time since his accident in December. In the narrow 0-1 defeat against Guatemala in the opening game of the Gold Cup, the 35-year-old professional of West Ham United for Jamaica was substituted in the 85th minute.

Antonio drove his Ferrari against a tree in early December and had broken his thigh at four different places, among other things. He was in the hospital for three weeks. He later said: “I almost died.” His return had been expected in autumn at the earliest. However, Antonio had other ideas and strived for a much earlier return. He now succeeded with his national team.

In the run -up to the tournament, Antonio had trained with the Jamaican national team in preparation for the Unity Cup. His achievements in these units impressed the coaching staff around the English chief coach Steve Mcclaren so much that he was appointed to the squad for the Gold Cup.

While Antonio is celebrating his return on the international stage, his club situation is still unresolved. At West Ham, his contract expires on June 30, the association initially offered him a short -term extension at reduced conditions, which Antonio rejected, however, because he wanted a longer commitment and a better salary.

West Ham wrote: “In view of the particular situation of Mikhail Antonio, who suffered a serious traffic accident in December 2024, there will be no formal decision about his future until it is considered correct and appropriate.”

At first, however, Antonio is working towards his possible next use. Jamaica plays his second group game against Guadeloupe on Saturday.
