In the youth academy of Ajax, Tom Overtoom was one of the greatest talents. The midfielder played with players such as Daley Blind, Marko Veijinovic and Aras Özbiliz. This last player said the following about his former teammate on the Ajax site in November 2018: “Tom Overtoom was our number 10 and the greatest talent. At that time he was really the future of our team. I have no idea why he did not make it to the absolute top.”

Overtoom says the following about that: “In the youth at Ajax, a lot was indeed expected from me, only after that I was unable to make that next step. While other fellow players did break through, I found that quite difficult. In the end I did not make the top, but I played professional football for sixteen years. I am very proud of the career of my friends and Aras.”
