Get ready: in two days, from 16 to 18 June, A masterpiece that cannot be missed returns to the cinemasto see and review without ever getting tired (Cinetecadibologna.it). It is the second work of David Lynch, produced by Mel Brooks who did not want to appear in the heads because the public did not exchange the film for a comedy.

Tell Joseph’s true story (but is erroneously called John) Merrick, a man who was at the end of the nineteenth century affected by the rare “Proteo syndrome” which caused him deformations and swellies throughout the body and which was exhibited as a slum phenomenon, Saved by a surgeon who decided to make him hospitalized at the Royal London Hospital.

Anthony Hopkins and John Hurt in “The Elephant Man”

Gradually the unhealthy curiosity will leave the field to discover its sweetness of mind, but Lynch’s genius is not in telling a more or less edifying story but in overturning the rules of the genre: The meeting with the “monster” does not trigger our terror but his, Merrick is afraid of scary.

And the film becomes a moving reflection on voyeuristic instinct and “the elephant man” the mirror that refers to us the disturbing and hidden image of each of us.

For those who want to gratify themselves with a true masterpiece.
