After the 27th matchday of the expired Bundesliga season, Borussia Mönchengladbach ranked fifth in the table, even targeting the Champions League. Of the last seven games, Gladbach could not win a single one, which midfielder Julian Weigl worried very much afterwards.

“Eight game days before the end we were up there. And of course we, but also the environment, noticed that this year we may really be able to slip in the top. And yes, that was very annoying that we had our worst phase in the phase,” said Julian Weigl in the documentary “Behind Borussia” at the club’s own broadcaster “Foal TV”.

Among other things, the Gladbacher lost the games against the direct competitors SC Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund just 1: 2 or 2: 3, so it was possible to return to the European Cup in the coming season.

Despite the bad phase, the 29-year-old, who had led VfL on the field most of the season as a captain, did not create too negative impression: “I think many have signed this tenth place after the last Bundesliga year with which we ended the season. Of course, a lot better than last season. We got a lot more victories, we simply played better.”

Weigl near Gladbach absolutely set

In fact, Borussia Mönchengladbach won six games more than in the previous year when the team of head coach Gerardo Seoane was still in the relegation battle until the penultimate match day.

“You saw that we have become mature compared to last year. And yet the last games have shown that there is still a lot that we naturally have to improve – in the end to score more points,” said Weigl as a conclusion. The former international was absolutely set at the Gladbachers. 33 times he was in the foal starting eleven and was only missing once due to a yellow lock.
