The wool of the Drenthe heath sheep is often thrown away in the Netherlands, because there is no more wool industry in the Netherlands. “Throwing away is a shame,” says Waanders. “These sheep have such beautiful colors, from reddish to deep brown, sometimes almost pink, but you only see that when you wash the wool. And those long locks are really unique.”
The felt work happened in five intensive weeks, with around twenty volunteers. Everyone contributed a bit to the big whole, a triptych of 8.5 meters high and 3.5 meters wide.
“It’s a whole process,” explains Beatrice. “The wool must be completely wet, otherwise it will not felt, so we sprayed all day long. Then rub in, flatten, roll. And yes, even the ironing bolt was used.”
