She started as number 361 in the world at the French Open – now Loïs Boisson has made it into the semi -finals. And a favorite player thrown out of the tournament.
The French audience hardly trusted his eyes on Wednesday evening: Wildcard player Loïs Boisson provided the next big surprise at the French Open and reached the semi-finals. The 22-year-old defeated the Russian Mirra Andrejewa in the quarterfinals with 7: 6 (8: 6), 6: 3-and thus transformed the Court Philippe-Chatrier into a cauldron.
Boisson, number 361 in the world, is the first French since Marion Bartoli 14 years ago to reach a semi -finals in Paris. The world ranking second Coco Gauff is waiting there on Thursday. The American prevailed in an intensive duel against compatriot Madison Keys with 6: 7 (6: 8), 6: 4, 6: 1. In the other semi-finals, world rankings aryna Sabalenka and defending champion Iga świątek meet.
Boisson was known as only insiders at the beginning of the year. Actually, she should have given her Grand Slam debut in Paris in 2023, but a cruciate ligament rupture broke her out. She had to pause for three quarters – even a career end was under discussion.
Boisson then got into the headlines in an unwanted way in April. At the tournament in Rouen, France, her British opponent Harriet Dart had complained to the referee about Boisson’s body odor. “Can you tell her that she should use a deodorant? Because she smells really bad,” said Dart at the time. Boisson himself reacted with humor: on Instagram she posted a picture of herself with a deodorant in her hand and wrote in the direction of the brand: “Apparently need a collaboration.”
At the French Open there is no longer any talk of secondary locations – Boisson has played in the foreground in terms of sport. In the round of 16, she already threw the number three in the world with Jessica Pegula. Andrejewa could not stop her either.
