Former boxing world champion Mike McCallum died surprisingly early. The circumstances of his death are curious and still unclear.
The boxing world mourns the loss of the Jamaican ex-world champion Mike McCallum, who died at the age of 68. As the “Jamaica Observer” reports, McCallum suddenly felt uncomfortable on the way to the gym in Las Vegas and stopped on the side of the road. Shortly afterwards he was found lifeless in his car. The exact circumstances of his death are currently still unclear, the Las Vegas police have investigated.
The Jamaican Minister of Sports Olivia Grange was deeply affected by the loss: “With great and deep sadness, I learned about Jamaica’s triple world champion Michael McKenzie McCallum.” She expressed her condolences to the family of the deceased and described the boxer as a “Jamaican legend”.
McCallum was known for his extraordinary technology in the ring and was able to win titles in three different weight classes in his almost two decades long career. He ended his career in 1997 with a record of 49 wins, 36 of them through knock-out, five defeats and a draw.
Among his opponents were well -known names like Roy Jones Jr., James Toney and Julian Jackson. Because of his ability to murmure opponents with targeted body fights, he got the nickname “The Bodysnatcher”. After his active time, he was included in the “International Boxing Hall of Fame” and was recognized by the “Ring Magazine” as one of the ten best middle weight world champion of the past 50 years.
