Baboons are not digibets. In fact, they appear to be able to handle technology all too well. Or did they just accidentally press the right button? In Wildlands, Bavians managed to steal the phone from 32-year-old Shahra Bahloul last week and wonderfully enough they filmed themselves with the device.

It went wrong when Shahra tried to make a video of the baboons in the Emmer Zoo. She was accidentally touched, so her phone fell into the animals’ stay. She was shocked and very disappointed, she says Heart of the Netherlands.

“I look down and I think: oh no! They all ran to it and then they grabbed the phone. They pulled it back and again with a lot of sound. I thought: nothing is left of that,” says Shahra.

A day later, cleaners managed to find her phone, piece. Via iCloud she was still able to go with her photos and videos. “I suddenly saw videos passing by. I thought: it would not be? Then it turned out that the baboons had made films of themselves. I had to laugh really about it. It’s unlikely. How? Mega Laughing,” Shahra tells the TV program.

“It makes up for a lot. The device is broken, but this is unique and funny.”

Animal caretaker Gert Koers van Wildlands sees more often that a telephone falls in the baboons. But he thinks that it is then also filmed with it. “They find such a device very interesting,” he says about the baboons. “They smell it, want to know what it is. And then they also destroy it. If that is the case, they will also transfer to the order of the day.”
