The German Ski Association is applying with Oberstdorf for the World Championships in ski jumping, cross -country skiing and in the Nordic combination 2031.

Alternatively, an application with Oberwiesenthal and Klingenthal in Saxony would have been possible. According to the DSV, the decision for the location in Bavaria was made in a joint round of coordination by the organizers.

“After weighing up the German application opportunities and careful examination of the infrastructural necessities for a World Cup orientation, we approved a German application with the Oberstdorf location,” Heiko Krause, President of the Saxony Ski Association, is cited in a message from the DSV. “But our goal remains to bring the Nordic Ski World Cup to Saxony in the foreseeable future.”

German opportunities are good

A German application for 2033 was originally planned. However, because the Austrian towns of Ramsau and Bischofshofen are no longer applying for 2031, the DSV has carried out a change of strategy.

The shorter preparation time speaks for Oberstdorf, where the World Cup took place in 1987, 2005 and 2021. The title fights four years ago in the middle of the Corona pandemic went into history as a ghost World Cup without spectators.

The award for 2031 is expected to take place in around a year. The competitor is the Slovenian Planica, where World Championships were not held until 2023. The German opportunities for a surcharge are considered good.
