Mathematics, psychology but also so much in common with the economy. Poker, if we think about it, is synonymous with investment. We focus on ourselves and our skills when we enroll in a tournament. At the same time we play many dishes, investing chips and thinking about the economic return
When you want to deepen some Technical-Strategic Thetegical themes of Texas Holdem, it often happens to come across numbers but also to economic principles. The term we analyze today goes in that direction. What is and what does EV means? We try to explain it, analyzing it also from a numerical point of view
Football helps us
–
The vast majority of Gazzetta readers has a vast knowledge of the world of football. So why not start from something well known to understand a not so intuitive but in fact simple principle. Since there are advanced statistics, in the world of ball there is more and more often about XG. The “X” means “Expected” or “expected”. To immediately understand the concept, we think of a penalty kick, one of the easiest ways to score goals. In reality “simple” is not the correct adjective but only from the (car) correction will we understand why. Answer this question: How long are there to score a penalty kick? Everyone will have thought of their number but long -term studies say that you have 75% of chance of scoring goals. To return to the adjective: it is not the easiest but most probable way. So, pull 100 penalties, I “await” to score more or less 75 goals. At the same time I expect to Do not mark 25 shots from the spot. To summarize: a penalty has 0.75 of XG or 75% of expected goals. Every time reading a “x” means “Expected”
What does EV means in poker and how to calculate?
–
In poker, that X becomes a “e”, as in economics. “And” stands for “Expected” which does not change the concept compared to the football example. The expected value is defined as the profit (or loss) that we expect to obtain in the long run, making a certain play. In poker, the calculation is more difficult to clear it because, let’s remember, let’s play against a range and not against a well -known hand. Making the correct decisions (i.e. with positive EV) in the long run will make you winning players. When you feel saying “you made a play -ev”, it means that by repeating that action (bet, call, etc) 1000 times, the balance will be negative. Let’s see a practical example: we are playing a hand and the dish is 1,000 chips. For convenience we say that we are after River (the concept, however, applies to every moment of the game). From the more or less correct reasoning that we do we think we have 60% of the possibility of winning the dish. How calculation the EV? The answer comes from the simple operation: dish multiplied probability. In this case doing 1000*0.60 we get 600. What does it mean? That if my opponent points 500, in the long run the game will be +EV since 600-500 = 100
