Guns n ‘Roses returned to Abu Dhabi for a concert in the Etihad Arena on Tuesday evening. It was their fourth visit to the United Arab Emirates since 2017. And they put together a varied setlist for this occasion and had some surprises ready. The most remarkable of it came towards the end of the evening when she was the first time in her story as a live act of the 1974 classic “Human Being” from the New York Dolls played. (You mentioned the lead singer of the Dolls, David Johansennot. But you can assume that his Death in February she inspired them.
“Human Being” celebrates live debut
Most recently, they played “Human Being” during the recordings for their cover collection “The Spaghetti Incident?” From 1993. On the album, “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory” by New York can also be heard Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunder. Duff McKagan sings the latter songs. And has always been a fan of Thunder and the Dolls.
Duff McKagan about Johnny Thunder’s voice
“The way Johnny sings is unique”, McKagan told 2021 Kerrang!. “It’s scratchy. It is tinny. And it is not the kind of voice that you absolutely want to hear again. And yet it is exactly that. It is perfect. And the guitar sound that he gets out of his Les Paul Junior – and from whatever amplifier he has at hand – also sounds perfect.”
He was particularly enthusiastic about his solo album “So Alone” from 1978. “The punk rock scene was really cool at the time. Full of freaks of all stripes and every sexual orientation,” he said. “So Alone” was part of this experience for me. It offered an emotional element in music. And was reflected. It was full of stories. It was perhaps the equivalent of a bob-dylan album for my generation. ”
McKagan’s bandmate from Guns N ‘Roses share his love for the dolls. But they rarely played their music at concerts. Before Thursday evening, the only song by the New York Dolls, who made it into a Guns N ‘Roses concert, was on May 13, 2014, when bassist Tommy Stinson sang the dolls song “CHatterBox”.
