In three competitive thirds, there was no single hit in the final of the ice hockey World Cup. The overtime needed to find the world champion.
The United States has been ice hockey world champions again for the first time since 1933. In a gripping final against Switzerland, the North Americans won overtime after there was no goal in the 60 minutes of regular season. In 1960 the US success at Olympia was also considered a World Cup victory.
Switzerland, on the other hand, received the fourth final defeat after 2013, 2018 and 2024 and continued to wait for the first World Cup title. Days Thompson needed less than three minutes in extra time to score the decisive goal. It is the third World Cup title for the USA.
The Swiss walked lightly and easily against Austria (6-0) and Denmark (7-0) into the final. The US boys were another caliber. Thompson from the Buffalo Sabres and Co. put a lot of pressure on the Swiss. Goalkeeper Leonardo Genoni had to show his skills several times and saved his team from an early deficit.
“Our goalkeeper was there for us,” praised the Swiss Timo Meier his 37 -year -old goalie at ProSieben. “We have to do a better job now.”
The Swiss did not get the nimble Americans under control even in the middle third. Genoni kept his team in the game: the Keeper from EV Zug (26th minute) parried a penalty from Conor Garland from the Vancouver Canucks. Even outnumbered, the United States had better opportunities than the opponent. Memories became awake of the past year when the Swiss in the final in Prague against the Czech Republic made too little possibilities and lost 0: 2.
The nervousness increased more and more among the Swiss. The Americans, with an average of 24 years old,, on the other hand, always came to good opportunities. Routinier Genoni almost brought his opponents with reflexes and parades to despair.
In the extension of three against three, Thompson’s great hour, which gave Genoni no chance of defense. His much acclaimed goal decided the 88th Ice Hockey World Championship.
Host Sweden previously secured third place against Denmark. Despite the bronze medal, the home tournament for the favorite Tre Kronor was disappointing. For co-host Denmark, the semi-finals were the greatest success at a World Cup.
The Danes had previously provoked the preliminary round of the German team. In the quarter-finals, an ice hockey sensation was achieved with the 2-1 against Canada.
