Mats Hummels would have liked a different farewell to his heart club Borussia Dortmund. Now the BVB icon received support from one of his long-time companions, who at the same time had a clear criticism of the club bosses.

If it goes to Neven Subotic, Borussia Dortmund did not give a good picture in the course of the separation of Mats Hummels around a year ago.

The long -standing Borusse and teammate of Hummels said in the “double pass” on “Sport1”: “If you already wear the slogan ‘real love’ what the slogan of BVB is, it is difficult if there are always examples that do not prove this, but rather prove the opposite.”

His farewell “could have been better”, as he knew himself. Subotic, 232-way Bundesliga player, had turned his back on Dortmund in January 2018 after a total of 196 competitive games, three and a half years later he ended his career. With black and yellow he won the championship twice and twice the trophy.

Hummels: “It should have been different”

In the “ZDF” documentary “Hummels-La Finale”, Mats Hummels complained, among other things, how the club managers had been informed. “It should have been different than with me. Actually, it is more the case that it is told in a personal conversation,” he first learned about it from the press. Maybe someone wanted to “pay home” to him before the Champions League final 2024, in which he had criticized the tactic of the then head coach Edin Terzic, was his suspicion.

Hummels also emphasized in the documentary that he would like to end his career at BVB. He even approached the club bosses to talk about a return – possibly for the upcoming club World Cup. Dortmund is the only club for which he would have postponed the targeted career end.

Subotic: “Here we have the case of a very credible Mats Hummels, who criticizes with a heavy heart. But rightly because it could be a success story – not only for him, but also for the club, in order to actually go into this ‘real love’.”

He would “treat” it to both his former teammate and his ex-club if both sides find a conciliatory farewell: “To do this, one or the other club chairman has to pull the shorter and change his opinion. I hope that this happens.”
