Berlin (dpa -AfX) – Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil has confident that the United States and the European Union agree in the customs dispute. “I am carefully optimistic that this will succeed,” said the SPD politician in the ARD “Report from Berlin”. There is a crucial phase of negotiations. A common solution is also in the US interest. “They should also be interested in working with us,” said the finance minister. “A solution has to come quickly now. Otherwise we will experience massive unrest in the markets.”
On Friday, US President Trump threatened the EU with punitive tariffs from 50 percent to imports from Europe from June 1st. It is unclear whether they will actually come into force. Trump has regularly threatened with high tariffs in the past – and then carried out a U -turn. EU trading commissioner Maros Sefcovic said after a conversation with the US side that the EU was determined to achieve a “deal” that was good for both sides./shy/dp/he
