Broken twig of a birch tree suddenly flew away

Jasper van Buul thought he saw a broken stick of a birch tree, but when he wanted to pick it up, it flew away! What did he see, is his question? On the photo that Jasper sent, you indeed see an insect that looks a bit like a birch branch or oak branch. The animal, a butterfly, has a bark -like color on the body and you will see a pale -yellow round spot near the wing point and the breastpiece. We are dealing here with the moth (not a moth!) With the name Wapendrager. These moths are happy to come to the light. They live in deciduous forests, but also in gardens and parks. During the day they are hardly visible because their camouflage is perfect. The head of the caterpillar has the shape and drawing of a clay (the threads are applied diagonally) coat of arms. But according to some people, the name is based on the shield -shaped spots on the points of the front wings.
Sneak out a dragonfly, but what is it?

Marlies Schetters sent me a beautiful photo of a recorrper that has just been sitting in front of the nymph from which that dragonfly emerged. In This video of Josette Veltman-de Greef Can you clearly see what sneaking out of a dragonfly looks like. The wings at the Libel van Marlies – which has been photographed in the Heemtuin in Rucphen – are now looking good. I think the insect is ready to fly away. Marlies does not write in her message which dragonfly it is, so I will tell that name. The dragonfly has light green spots on the abdomen. Later these spots become a bit darker green and a few blue spots appear at the very back. The name of this type of dragonfly is blue glazier. This insect belongs to the family of the glassmakers, within the group of real dragonflies. The name Glassmaker is based on the resemblance to the glassmakers of the past, when no cars were driving around yet. The people who had a broken window then called the glass trade. Then the glazier wore the glass in a framework of slats on the back, making it just looked wings. Blue glassmakers are large dragonflies – a maximum of 7.5 centimeters – and are most seen of all glass makers. They live from approximately the end of July to mid -September and like to hunt in places with a lot of half -shadow. You can certainly encounter them in your garden, but also on forest paths.
Found wood waspboktor?

Willy Manders sent me a photo of an insect that Willy thought was a wood waspboktor. I doubted very much. I have seen the wood waspboktor (Necydalis Major) myself, but in Belgium. It is true that the wood waspboktor is extremely rare in our country. In fact, this insect has deteriorated sharply. There are not even recent observations of this insect, See this link. In addition, I miss the thickening in the middle of the two hind legs at the insect in the photo of Willy. I also don’t see the light red color at the start of the legs of the insect, on Willy’s photo. That is why I think it is a different rare insect, from the family of the ordinary parasitic wasps. This insect does not yet have a Dutch name. The scientific name is Coleocentrus excitator. On Willy’s photo is the male of the Coleocentrus excitator, because the female of course has a laying drill behind her body. That would be easier with the recognition. Unfortunately I cannot add a photo (I can’t find any royalty -free photo) of the Hout Wespboktor, but if someone wants to compare them, then that is best via This link.

In the section beautiful photos this time a photo taken by Dennis van Helden. He captured a special pintail night butterfly in the Spanish Malgrat da Mar. The name is striped pile tail. Of these, two caterpillar finds were once in our country.
Natural tip

Sunday 1 June you can participate in an early bird walk on the Wijst from seven to ten in the morning.
The soils in Uden are three small nature reserves on the road from Uden to Vorstenbosch. De Loose Beemden, the Raktse Beemden and De Koolert together cover an area of approximately 41 hectares. Staatsbosbeheer is the owner of this.
Due to the Peelrand break, there are local blocks in the earth layer that cause swampy areas in the higher part of this landscape. There are water -retaining clay layers and iron benches. They cause a high water level and a special composition of the groundwater. The result is a rich flora and fauna. In 2004, the Wijstgronds were named the first geography in the province by the province of Noord-Brabant. Since 2020, the ambition has been a UNESCO recognized by this.
