FC Barcelona is actually the ultimate in women’s football. But in the Champions League, the Catalans were discharged.
The WFC Arsenal has a surprise in European women’s football: In the Champions League final of Lisbon, the English defeated favorites FC Barcelona 1-0 (0-0). It is the first title in the “premier class” for 18 years for the London women.
Stina Blackstenius decided the game in the 75th minute with a goal after a pass from Beth Mead. The Swedish striker stayed ice cold in front of the goal – Barça had left too much space at that moment. Arsenal celebrated the first international title win since 2007 in front of 38,356 spectators in the Estádio José Alvalade.
For a long time it didn’t look like Arsenal was winning this final. The Spaniards determined the game over long distances and pressed the goal, especially in the second round. In the 50th minute, Clàudia Pina only hit the crossbar – it was the best opportunity for Barça.
But Barcelona showed weaknesses in the decisive phase of the game. In the defense, the necessary concentration was missing in places, and that was exactly what the Gunners used. Despite fewer chances, the team of coach Jonas Eisevall remained efficient – and secured the title with a single but decisive goal.
