Bono has on Thursday evening at the 2025 Ivor Novello Awards An end of the war between Israel and Hamas required.
U2 receives the highest award from the Ivors Academy
During the award ceremony in the London Grosvenor House, U2 was the first Irish band with the Fellowship of the Ivors Academy. Bono took the opportunity to criticize Hamas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The rock band played their song “Sunday Bloody Sunday” from 1983, which deals with the 1972 massacre, in which the British army shot on unarmed demonstrators and finally killed 14 people.
“In the past, I always initiated this song with the words that it was not a rebel song,” said Bono, according to NME. “This was because the belief in the possibility of peace then as now is a rebellious act. Some would even say a ridiculous.”
Bono uses the stage for political appeal
“It was a ridiculous idea to believe that peace between your country and our country, between our country and itself. “Hamas, leave the hostages free. Ends the war. Israel, frees you from Benjamin Netanyahu and the right -wing extremist fundamentalist who twist your holy texts. Protect all of our development aiders, they are the best of us.”
Faith in peace as resistance
It is the first time that Bono expresses his opinion on the continuing conflict. He ends his short acceptance speech with the words: “God, you have to be so tired of us. The children of Abraham, who lie in the ruins of their certainties. Children in the rubble of our revenge. God forgive us.”
