Ukrainian refugees in Zoetermeer: this is the state of affairs

Zoetermeer has so far provided emergency shelter to 121 Ukrainian refugees. They are currently staying in Zoetermeer hotels. More and more residents of Zoetermeer are also taking refugees into their homes. The next steps are arranging new housing, education for the children, work and language lessons.

The municipality is looking at locations in the city that can be used as housing. Emergency shelter in hotels is temporary. Even if no one knows how long living spaces will be needed, the location must be available for a longer period of time and suitable for living.

To work

It is important that the refugee Ukrainians learn Dutch and are able to work. This is not possible simply because of a so-called work permit. Fortunately, the government is now working on an exception rule so that they can get to work. In Zoetermeer, employment company De Binnenbaan will take on the task of helping people find work.

Host families

Within a few days time Refugees Zoetermeer set up. This organization is engaged in bringing together host families from Zoetermeer and the refugees. You can register via the website if you want to take someone in or if you want to make a donation.

Who pays the costs

Housing costs the municipality money. The Security Region and Zoetermeer do not yet know how much money is involved. But these unexpected costs must be paid. The government helps Dutch municipalities by reimbursing the costs. The GGD is responsible for medical care. They work together with GPs and pharmacies in Zoetermeer.

In addition, the costs of living money for the refugees, labor participation, daytime activities, education and more must also be taken into account. The government is working on a living allowance scheme for the refugees that will be ready on March 24 at the earliest. And how about extra hours and costs that municipal employees incur internally to be able to organize this? It is not yet clear how this will be arranged.
