The project is an initiative of artist Ingrid Dewit from Kortrijk. The crane is a Japanese symbol for peace. In total, around 14,000 figures must be folded, with as many people as possible. In August there will be an art installation in the church of Houtave, near Zuienkerke
Artist Ingrid Dewit: “The idea is that for every child who died, we fold one crane. The moment I started playing with that idea, 6,000 children had died of course. In the meantime, that project was of course expanded because we are unfortunately already at 14,000 children. But because we are making a participatory project, the idea that the more people should stop, the more people.”
