THEn an era in which gender identity and sexual orientation are often at the center of ideological clashes, science proposes a compass to orient themselves. Is called Xygo and was conceived by Emmanuele A. Janninifull professor of endocrinology and medical sexology at the University of Tor Vergata. Published in the magazine Nature Reviews UrologyXygo is the first psychometric tool able to represent the fundamental components of a person’s sexuality in a complete, dynamic and inclusive way.

How XYGO works: the twenty rose of sexuality

Xygo is based on three coordinates: Xy (the sex assigned to birth), G (gender identity: “Who I feel I am”) and OR (sexual orientation: “Who I like”). The peculiarity of the model is its form: a Piano Cartesian which replaces the cardinal points with couples such as male/female and heterosexual/homosexual. On a scale from -3 to +3, each can describe himself with a personal formula. For example, “X, G+3, O-3” indicates a person born female, who completely identifies himself in the female gender and has a heterosexual orientation.

Fluid identity, precise representation

“The strength of Xygo – said Jannini – is that it allows not only to identify, but also not to do it”. The model in fact provides for the zero as a neutral point and welcomes all possible fluctuations identity, including non -tracking paths. It is not a rigid tool, but a dynamic mapable to tell who we are today and also who we could become over time, without obligations of fixed consistency. It is a way to clearly represent and respect the complexity of sexual identity, without falling into simplification.

Research, clinic and self -determination

Designed for the clinical and academic world, Xygo is a tool scientific and diagnosticuseful for doctors and psychologists to collect data and build more personalized paths. But it is also accessible to everyonewithout the need for external supports, to describe one’s identity authenticly and aware. “Xygo is a dynamic tool that can be used in all clinical conditions and beyond. – Jannini concludes – Because sexual identity arises from the interaction between body, mind, experience and society. And it deserves to be listened to without prejudice ».
