Julian Nagelsmann is waiting for a squad puzzle before the National League finals, some regular players fail. The chance for young players – and excited.
In the football summer 2025 it is quick: after the Bundesliga final, the final four tournament of the Nations League in Germany follows from June 4th to 8th. Julian Nagelsmann will announce the squad for the final round on Thursday.
Before the nomination, however, there are some questions for the national coach. There are large construction sites in central defense, as are storms – but at the same time there are opportunities for excessive and talent.
Ter Stegen or Baumann? Goalkeeper question arises for Nagelsmann again
Does Marc-Andre Ter Stegen return to the number one between the posts? After his patella tendon tear in the right knee, the Barca keeper is fit again, on May 3rd he gave his comeback in the league. However, only one more game has been added since then-the 33-year-old was no longer on the pitch for more than 220 days.
The replacement number-and-old, Oliver Baumann, performed well in both quarter-final games of the Nations League against Italy. Nagelsmann stated the trust: “If he is fit and healthy and 100 percent powerful, then he will be number one.” For Nagelsmann, the question arises how he will interpret the 100 percent performance after only two games in the league.
Defense: Who replaces Rüdiger and Schlotterbeck in the DFB team?
Greater than with the goalkeeper question are the worries in the defense for the DFB trainer: with Antonio Rüdiger, the defense chief fails with a meniscus tear in the left knee. Nico Schlotterbeck, who would have been the first replacement candidate, also lack a meniscal tear. Jonathan Tah, on the other hand, is fit; The most likely is that Robin Koch is moving into the central defense next to the still Leverkusener.
Niklas Süle could return to the DFB team.
This opens up opportunities for players who were last in the DFB dress in the back: Waldemar Anton is a hot candidate, and a return for Niklas Süle is also conceivable. In the end of the season, both central defenders had a large part in the fact that BVB still made it into the Champions League.
The nomination of Yann-Aurel Bisseck, who only gave his DFB debut against Italy in March of this year, is likely. However, the 24-year-old plays the Champions League final with Inter Milan just a week before the first Nation’s League round game.
Midfield: Quietly, Eberl has “a lot to discuss” at Musiala
Almost all of the regular players are fit in midfield. But Angelo Stiller (ligament injury) is questionable, and the Nations League could also come too early for Jamal Musiala. The midfielder has been out with a muscle bundle tear since the beginning of May.
“We don’t want to burn Jamal”said Bayern sports director Max Eberl at the press conference before the last Bundesliga matchday. “After the Nations League, the club World Cup comes, then the World Cup comes at some point. There is a lot to discuss”according to the 51-year-old.
Sturm: Havertz fit again, Woltemade “threatens” a long summer
In the storm there are concern and hope for Julian Nagelsmann close together. With a serious knee injury, Tim Kleindienst, who was most recently the regular center forward in the DFB team, will be safe. Hope, on the other hand, gives Kai Havertz’s comeback, who ran for Arsenal last Saturday. In February, the team doctors forecast the season out of the season after a severe thigh injury.
Another hot candidate for the Sturmspitze is Nick Woltemade. The 23-year-old Stuttgart is one of the discoveries of the season, in 28 league games he scored twelve goals. At the U21 national team, it was recently a fixture, for the European Championship in Slovakia, it is firmly planned. However, it only begins on June 11th, the last game in the National League finals is dated June 8-so Woltemade would have time.
Nick Woltemade is the starter of the season at the VfB Stuttgart.
Jonathan “Jonny” Burkardt can also hope for a nomination after a strong and almost injury -free season. The 24-year-old was again taken into account by Nagelsmann for the national team after half a year in March.
For Niclas Füllkrug, on the other hand, it gets tight: the 32-year-old who is in summer West Ham United in the Premier League Missed, almost the entire season was canceled – first with thigh problems, then with an Achilles tendon injury. In 16 league games, only meager three goals and two templates jumped out. This is not enough for a striker with DFB claim.
