Loud pencil, exhausted laughter, an “okay”. This is how Goodbye Small Head. Ezra Furman has spent. Vocal, emotional. This record is about loss of control – through physical malfunctions, social conditions, an unpredictable driver. And who could transport the associated urgency better than the striking voice of Furmans?
Goodbye Small Head is not a rushed garage punk ride like the previous album twelve nudes. Furman and band treat themselves to a string quartet that gives “Grand Mal” or “A World of Love and Care” Cinematic Grandzza. In between: calm and acoustically swaying “Veil Song” or even muffled simmering synth rock called “submission”.
The creaking rock’n’roll-spirit and the trembling feelings always travel along, can suddenly reach into the wheel and press the accelerator, if necessary with breakbeats. Lyrical this is blunt, little poetic, it just has to get out. But unlike in “Jump Out”, there is no need to open the car door. The jaunt is exciting, you want to know what is waiting behind the next curve.
