Since this Wednesday, a new fairy tale can be admired in the fairy tale forest of Efteling: ‘the princess on the pea’. What makes this fairy tale extra special is the princess himself. The King’s daughter is the first Arabic protagonist in the Fairytale Forest.
The new fairy tale was unveiled on Wednesday morning in the presence of Little Red Riding Hood and other fairy -tale characters. At the unveiling a large blue canvas was pulled aside and so the princess’s home was made visible. Many Efteling visitors were eager to take a look at the princess’s palace after the unveiling.

The princess is high and dry in a large stack of mattresses in the humble hut, but she doesn’t succeed. Under the mattresses is a very small pea hid that only a real princess could notice.
The pea from the famous fairy tale has already been seen in the amusement park. The green pea was in the Sprookjesmuseum and the Efteling Museum between 1963 and 2017, but the arrival of the stack of mattresses now makes the stay of the fairy tale final. The story of ‘the princess on the pea’ is the 31st fairy tale in the fairy tale forest of Efteling.
In recent months, a royal house for the princess was built on the edge of the forest, between the troll king and the well of Vrouw Holle. For the design of the palace, inspiration was achieved from a sketch by Anton Pieck.
The story
Once there was a prince who only wanted to marry a real princess. To find it, his parents think of a trick: anyone who after a night of sleeping on twenty mattresses still feels that there is a pea under the pile, you have to be a real princess.
There is an open application and many girls come by, but they all sleep wonderfully. Until on a stormy day a girl on the sidewalk of the palace is in a frayed dress. She claims to be a real princess and takes the pea test.
The girl does not close an eye and tells extensively in the morning about the stone that seemed to be under her bed. The king and queen are convinced and the prince marries the princess.
