Paul McCartney had the gospeling soul of Aretha Franklin in mind when he started writing the song in 1968-during the “White Album” sessions.
The first song line – “When I Find MySelf in Times of Trouble/ Mother Mary Comes to Me” – went back to a dream in which his late mother Mary told him that he shouldn’t worry about the future. “I’m not sure if she used the words ‘Let it be’. But that was the quintessence of the dream.”
The Beatles had problems in abundance
For a whole month they had been rehearsed in front of film cameras and made live recordings to trace the Beatles to their roots as a beat band. (George Martin was deliberately pushed onto the siding.)
In fact, the recordings turned out to be a disaster. In which the previous differences converted into open hostility. Lennon, who was not enthusiastic about “Let It Be”, made his jokes about the seriousness of the song. “Shouldn’t we all giggle with the solo?” After all, the band worked on the song for several days. And on January 31, 1969, the Basic Tracks recorded in the Apple Studio.
After the film recordings were completed on the same day, the collected ligaments were pressed in hand. Who should crystallize out of it for which the working title “Get Back” was intended.
Harrison was not happy with the “Let It Be” solo that Lennon had chosen. He recorded a new solo. And let it run over the rotating leslie speakers of the organ. This version finally landed on the single.
Appearance Phil Spector
Almost a year after the original recording, McCartney, Harrison and rigid came together. To finally complete some songs, including “Let IT BE”. McCartney newly recorded Lennon’s bass track, Harrison arranged another solo (which then appeared on the album version), a wind replacement, was added by Martin, was added, and Harrison sang alongside Paul and Linda the background vocals.
More about the Beatles
After Phil Spector had produced the Lennon single “Instant Karma”, Lennon was so impressed by Spector’s work that he and Beatles managers asked all of him to rework the ligaments from January 1969. “He was given the most shitty collection shitty of sounding with a hideous feeling,” said Lennon, “and he managed to get something sensible.” Spector mixed up the title track of the album and got the producer credit. McCartney should later describe Spectors version as “hideous”.
“If it is shitty, you will of course attach it to me”
Glyn Jones emphasized that he still prefers his rudimentary mix – “before Spector turned out to be turned over”. Spector himself said that the atmosphere within the band was “a minefield” – and that under these circumstances he got the best out of these circumstances: “If it is shitty, you will of course attach it to me. If it was successful, it was the Beatles.”
“Let it be” was published on March 11, 1970. A month later, on April 10, McCartney took the publication of his first solo album as an opportunity to announce the final end of the Beatles.
On the album: “Let it be” and “Past Masters”. Recorded: 25, 26 and 31 January, April 30, 1969, January 4, 1970. Published: March 6, 1970.
