A team from the University of Buenos Aires was awarded as “Distinguished delegation” In the 2025 edition of the National Model United Nations (NMUN), one of the most relevant interuniversity skills globally, organized with the official sponsorship of the United Nations. The delegation, made up of eight students from the Faculties of Law, Economic Sciences and Social Sciences, was highlighted among more than 200 participating universities in the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America.
The UBA participated for the third consecutive time in this United Nations model, which is celebrated every year in New York City and that summons young people from all over the world to discuss key issues of the international agenda, simulating the work of diplomats in the official UN committees.
Since its inception in 1927 – then under the name of the Model Assembly of the Nations Society – the NMUN has been a space for diplomatic formation and commitment to the values of multilateralism. In 1946, the event adopted its current format after the entry into force of the United Nations Charter, and since then it is considered a global seedbed of future leaders.
The rector of the University of Buenos Aires, Ricardo Gelpihe received the students in the High School Hall and celebrated their performance with words that marked institutional recognition: “We know that in this international recognition that has achieved the effort, study and perseverance that each of you performs daily. For us it is a great pride that they have represented so well, that they have put the name of the UBA at the top”. And added: “We are the largest university in the country, producer of knowledge and generator of professional and human resources. And you, our dear students, are the ones who best represent us”.
The distinguished delegation was made up of Iván Matías Berajá and Francisca Paz Ciucci (Faculty of Economic Sciences), Ashur Noufouri and María Pilar Sakson (Faculty of Social Sciences), and Ignacio Ullua, María de los Milagros Ré, Victoria Sofía Castro and Facundo Martín Donati (Law school). Academic preparation was led by the teacher Leopold Godio and the teacher Agustina N. Vázquez As a main tutor, with the support of former NMUN participants, who accompanied the training process with intensive training and practical simulations.
In addition to group recognition, the delegation won four additional awards for specific performance in committees: Best position document in ECOSOC and in the third commission of the General Assemblyand Best Delegation in the First and Third Commission.
The students themselves highlighted the value of the experience. For María Pilar Saksonparticipate was “A unique experience, not only for the days of competition, but also for the study group that formed. They were months of intense efforts where each of the members left everything”. Meanwhile, Victoria Sofía Castro He underlined collective pride: “Representing the UBA and leaving it at the top in an international academic field was a real pride for me and for the whole team”.
This edition marked a milestone: The UBA obtained the largest number of awards since it began participating in 2023consolidating its international projection and commitment to public formation of excellence. It was also the second time in which a joint delegation between different faculties was formed, demonstrating the interdisciplinary vocation and collaborative work as central values of the university.
With eleven awards in three yearsthe UBA reaffirms its leading role in international scenarios and its commitment to the development of young people capable of assuming global challenges from a critical, inclusive and committed perspective.
