In hiding camera
Professional photographers of the so -called ‘hiding camera’ have recorded in detail the last war year. According to René Kok from the NIOD war institute, “photography was not without risks”. He wrote a book about the group of photographers.
“It was strictly forbidden by the Germans. Because of their initiative we have such a good picture of the hunger winter and the German terror,” Kok explains. “They found the house of custody (the photographers, ed.) An important aspect, because that group also wanted to record the liberation.”
The moment when the doors would open and resistance people were able to close their families in their arms again, was high on the list of the photographers. Incorrect images have been made of this. Shortly before that, prisoners were removed from the house of custody and executed – in retaliation for resistance attacks. In 1944, for example, 49 people were shot on Apollolaan.
