This change of coach comes as a surprise: Gordon Herbert takes over the Canadian national basketball team in the summer of 2026. The Canadian association announced this.
Herbert’s current contract with the Bundesliga club Bayern Munich expires at this time. On the part of the club there was initially no reaction to the message. It was only on Wednesday that the association announced that Managing Director Marko Pešić will leave Bayern at the end of December 2025.
According to the association, the 66-year-old said that he felt “incredibly honored” and is very happy about the chance to train his home country. Canada won bronze at the 2023 World Cup-including NBA star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Herbert himself surprisingly led the German national team to the title at the tournament two years ago in Asia.
An exact contract period was not mentioned. However, the association announced that Herbert should lead the team to the 2027 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics.
Herbert was active for Canada as a player in the 1980s, and later he was also a coach on the sidelines. In Germany he worked in Würzburg, Frankfurt, Berlin – and since 2021 at Bayern.
