Breeding season started, but storm and typesetter provide extra work

Peace has returned to the forest since yesterday, as the breeding season has started again. But due to the storm damage and the death of the typesetter, Staatsbosbeheer is not quite finished with all activities yet.

“We hear a wren, a siskin, there is everything here”, forester Albert Henckel walks through the production forest in Ruinen. “For some, the breeding season has started earlier.”

The bird sounds are interspersed with the sounds of work in the forest. “What you still hear now is the spreading of the wood that has already been sawn. That may take a little longer and we are currently working on that,” explains Henckel.

“We do take into account the breeding season that officially started March 15 and lasts until July 15. But there are some exceptions in certain areas of forest where there are few birds or in this case also Norway spruce that has died from the typesetter, a small beetle , which means that there are very areas of bare trees. We are also allowed to saw there.”
