After the trophy victory against Real Madrid, the semi-finals in the Champions League are waiting for Inter Milan for Hansi Flick and FC Barcelona. The second triple of his career is possible. Parallels in his time at FC Bayern are recognizable.

Almost every player took a photo with the trophy on Sunday night. After all, FC Barcelona had just won the final around the Copa del Rey against the archrival Real Madrid 3-2. Anyone who could not be photographed with the trophy was Hansi Flick. The architect of success stood out and left the celebrations to his players.

After Copa victory is before the Champions League

“You deserve it. When I saw the celebrations after the game, that was incredible. I am very happy,” said a radiant Hansi Flick after the game. The final for the Copa del Rey on Saturday was Flicks seventh final. He won for the seventh time.

And the title trip could go further. The semi-final first leg in the Champions League against Inter Milan is already waiting on Tuesday. And in the league, too, the “Blaugrana” are on course championship, are four points ahead of five outstanding games – one of them the Clásico against Real Madrid. So Flick could get the second triple of his career. In 2020 he managed this feat with FC Bayern.

Flick popular from the start

Flick has been a FC Barcelona coach since summer. There he took over an association that had remained Titellos the previous season. With the fans, such as Josep Font Pinol, the former German national coach was well received from the start: “What I particularly liked is that when he arrived he said, he was very satisfied with the current team,” says the 40-year-old in the BR24Sport interview. “His predecessors Xavi or Koeman were Barca legends, but they kept complaining that they couldn’t achieve anything big with this team.”

Instead, Flick gave the players strongly and thus helped them forgotten, Pinol believes. “He built players like Inigo Martinez, Ferran Torres and Raphinha, who were actually already too badly stamped. He built the young players into top players. He brought calm to the club and gave the team soul and character.”

Parallels to FC Bayern

The parallels in his time at Bayern are obvious. Again Flick has managed to establish a clear game idea. Barcelona is currently playing the most attractive football for years. Flick had to tame an ensemble of top players, forming a real unit. Hardly anyone dances out of the line, everyone is subordinate to success. That was the same with Bayern at the time – with a key to the title triumph. Flick kept calm. It was only when the Zoff escalated with sports director Hasan Salihamidzic did he leave the club.

What Flick always awarded as a trainer: he was a father figure for his players. His former FCB professionals still praise him for this today. In the national team, his protégés danced on his nose at some point. Unforgettable, the gray-geese address at the World Cup in Qatar, which his players didn’t really seem to impress. The father role is well received in Catalonia, Flick seems to find the right words again, always has a hug or a laugh for his young players.

San Hansi Flick makes Guardiola forgot

And the success provides Flick and his coaching team around Marcus Sorg, Heiko Westermann and Toni Tapalovic. Flick is almost worshiped in the city. After the cup victory, fans bore signs on which Flick is portrayed as a saint.

“San Hans-Dieter Flick” once again aroused the enthusiasm for football in Barcelona, says Barça fan Font: “We have fun with Barça again. I didn’t go to Barça away from Barça for 13 years-but this team brought me back the joy of fan,” he says, who was also there on the night of Sevilla. Flick even forgot a Barça legend on the coaching bench. “In the past, the fans always had a longing for Guardiola. Now we would not exchange the coach for Guardiola for the first time,” said Font.

Flick’s crowning glory in Munich?

Under Guardiola, Barcelona won the first triple in his club’s history in 2009. Under Hansi Flick, this could succeed for the third time and for the second time in the career of the 60-year-old. With Hansi Flick it was the magical night of Lisbon in 2020. This year the Champions League Finale will take place in Munich and thus at Flick’s former place of work. Should he actually get the triple there in his first season – it would probably not be far to be cancellation.
