His passion shaped US skiing for generations: now the legendary athlete Chuck Ferries is dead.
The American ski racer Charles “Chuck” Thompson Ferries is dead. In 1962 he was the only American to win the slalom on the Ganslernhang in Kitzbühel. Ferries was 85 years old.
The organizers of the Hahnenkamm race announced that Ferries died shortly before Easter in Ketchum, in the US state of Idaho. “The Kitzbüheler Ski Club will keep him a worthy memory on the honor table of the Hahnenkamm races,” said an article on Instagram.
Ferrie’s victory in Kitzbühel is the highlight of his sporting career. In the victory, he catapulted himself to the top after eighth place in the first round.
Ferries was not only successful on the slopes, but also took part in the 1964 Olympics in Innsbruck and took 20th place in the departure. After his active career, he was involved in the American Ski Association as a coach and board member. He also founded his own ski company.
In addition to his performance in the competition, Ferries was shown in 1963 on the title page of the sports assignment “Sport Illustrated”. He was known for his unconventional driving style, in which he often drove with the inside of the ski. In 1989 he was included in the “National Ski Hall of Fame” of the USA.
