In the 1930s, a gap arose between the departing power of Great Britain and the emerging power, the United States, which only made the crisis of the time worse. Maarten and Marike discuss what is happening now that the global power relationships change again. The risks that arise here are summarized as the ‘Kindleberger Trap’: a theory about a dangerous leadership vacuum, as described by economist Charlie Kindleberger. Because what if a sitting world power no longer takes responsibility for important collective goods, such as safety, trade and financial stability?
