Serhou Guirassy is currently shining in the BVB jersey. But his club shows fluctuating performance. What would be possible with more consistency?
In the quarter-final second leg of the football champions League between Borussia Dortmund and FC Barcelona (3-1), one player stood out very special: Serhou Guirassy. The striker scored all three goals for the Borussia, including a Panenka penalty.
Last Sunday Guirassy scored again in the Bundesliga game against Mönchengladbach, just a few days after the Champions League spectacle. Dortmund won the game 3-2. It was the 16th Bundesliga goal in 26 missions. Guirassy’s quote is even better in the Champions League. There the striker from Guinea comes to a total of 13 goals. He leads the champions of the Champions League goal scorer. Even Robert Lewandowski has so far scored fewer goals than Guirassy.
The 29-year-old has experienced a steep climb in recent years. In the runner-up season of VfB Stuttgart 2023/24, it is particularly blowered. With 28 goals he delivered an internal record season. The switch to BVB followed, Guirassy wanted to take the next step in a even bigger club and develop further.
While Guirassy recently continuously went up, this cannot be asserted by the Dortmund team performance. The BVB is once again noticeable in the current season through fluctuating performance. A defeat followed again and again. In September, for example, Dortmund under ex-coach Nuri Şahin beat the then leaders Heidenheim 4-2. A game day later it set a 1: 5 swatter in Stuttgart. A 4-2 victory in the neighborhood duel against VfL Bochum followed a 1-2 defeat against Union Berlin.
Dortmund remained five league games without defeat before the winter break, came the low in January: the Dortmund lost three times in a row, including 2: 4 against Holstein Kiel. At the end of January, the dismissal of Nuri Şahin followed as a consequence, and Niko Kovač took over the helm.
Even if the results overall got a little better, Kovač also has to struggle with the BVB’s inconsistency. Dortmund struck in the Champions League teams such as Sporting, Lille or Barcelona, were too big hurdles in the Liga Bochum and Augsburg. Central defender Niklas Süle was on his team after the home win against Barcelona “Mega”, but also said that the question had to be asked “why we couldn’t do it in the Bundesliga”.
At 29, Guirassy himself could ask himself whether BVB would not slow him down with his fluctuating performance. Because the striker no longer has many chances of a big change abroad. According to media reports, he still has some top clubs on the piece. Teams like Manchester City, FC Arsenal or Real Madrid are said to have already expressed interest in the 1.87 meter man.
Despite a rumored exit clause for top clubs in the amount of 60 to 75 milllion, the father of three children has apparently been excluded. Sky reporter Patrick Berger reported last Monday in his BVB podcast “Auffe Süd” that it became known in the nearby environment of the player that he currently has no change of ambitions. Guirassy is “not yet finished at BVB and wants to build something,” said Berger. “He thinks the force of the club and the whole environment really good.”
But: The qualification for the Champions League is anything but safe. The BVB has four points behind in fourth place. The loyal Guirassy could also harm the premier class. Because in the Europa League or the Conference League, the focus would be a smaller one. So if he wanted to take a step abroad again, it would be less helpful to recommend himself. And so the inconsistent Dortmund performance would lead to the 29-year-old’s interesting career paths blocked.
