The animal dumped in Alkmaar was housed at Stichting Aap in Almere. In recent years, more and more reception requests for Servals have been received at that foundation, says spokesman Peter de Haan.
“Keeping servals as a pet is accompanied by a lot of suffering. Many of these animals have health problems. For example, they get the wrong diet or are housed in the wrong way. As a result, they get behavioral and physical problems.”
De Haan: “We are very happy that they are no longer allowed to be bred, but the animals that are still there must be a place again. Only there is not that much space for it.”
What if you want to get rid of your serval?
People who want to get rid of their serval can report that to a game shelter, such as Stichting AAP. “Always report it and wait until a place is released somewhere. Please do not dump the animal in nature. That is simply dangerous. Not only for the animal, but also for small children and other pets. Because cats, rabbits and chickens are prey animals for the serval.”
Incidentally, the dumped serval makes up for it. “He looked healthy, it is really a nice animal,” said Lambert of the Dierenbescherming.
