His charisma and style impressed fans as well as his skills. Now the former Argentine goalkeeper Hugo Gatti has died.
Argentine football has lost one of his formative characters: Hugo Gatti died in Buenos Aires at the age of 80. This was announced by the National Association AFA and the South American continental association Conmebol.
According to information from Argentine media, Gatti suffered a hip fracture almost two months ago in a fall. There were complications in the hospital. He fell ill from pneumonia and suffered from kidney failure. The urban health authority stated that Gatti died of multiplem organ failure.
During his 25-year career, Gatti became known as “El Loco”, the crazy, because of his striking style and charisma. The Argentinian newspaper “La Nación” recalled that Gatti was convinced that spectators should take more from the stadium visit than just the result. He was not only present on the pitch: Gatti was also in demand in advertising – among other things, he advertised gin.
In the Argentine league, Gatti brought it to 765 missions – as many as no other player in the country. For the Boca Juniors, he stood in over 300 games in the goal and won the Copa Libertadores twice with the club. In 1977 he prevailed with the team from Buenos Aires in the final of the World Cup against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
To this day, he shares the record for most of the penalty in the highest Argentine division with Ubaldo Fillol: 26 in number. Conmebol praised Gatti as a goalkeeper whose “unmistakable style survived generations and made him one of the best in Argentine football”.
