SVG Lüneburg is in the club history in the final of the Volleyball Bundesliga for the first time. The Lower Saxony prevailed on Saturday in game five against VfB Friedrichshafen in four sets (25:23, 25:23, 27:29, 25:19) and now meet the Berlin Volleys.
Of course, without a drama, the fifth game of this incredibly tight series was not possible. Already in the third set, the Lüneburger had the opportunity to make their first final feed perfect, but despite the clear leadership and match balls, they got their nerves.
But it was not offset. At the end of a long -lasting fourth set, the team of coach Stefan Hübner made a decisive position and converted the second match ball of the round. The cheers in the hall knew no limits – in the seventh attempt it finally worked with the first move into the final, the spell is broken.
The final series is now against the Berlin Volleys. Game one takes place next Sunday (April 27, 4 p.m.) in the Max-Schmeling-Halle. The recent three games of the currently best German teams against each other won the SVG.
Dominant block game in the first set
The game in the atmospheric Lüneburg Arena started with a good block game on both sides: Five of the first eight points fell five after Blocks – 4: 4 for the SVG. And of course it was another block of Lorenz Karlitzek who, with the fourth point in a row, ensured the 9: 7 of the hosts.
The Hübner team then gradually settled and in the meantime led 18:13 after a placed blow from outdoor attacker Xander Ketrzynski. But VfB struggled back and made the sentence exciting again because the service game was superior to that of the Lüneburg in this phase. Suddenly it was only 19:18. The SVG kept its nerves – 25:23.
Espeland with a strong second round
Set two started less spectacular than round one. Ketrzynski ensured the first highlight for the Lower Saxony with an ace through the middle. The game then swayed back and forth, the leadership changed several times. From Lüneburg’s point of view, there was always minor uncertainties in the pass, it was mainly Oskar Espeland, which led his team in the middle of the sentence.
And if it wasn’t the Norwegian, the Hübner team still had a Xander Ketrzynski. The Canadian hammered a ball for the first three-point lead of the set in the field-16:13.
Big VfB comeback in the third set
The third set then had a completely different storyline than the previous ones: Friedrichshafen replied to a 3-0 run by SVG with three points, which the hosts again countered with three points in a row (6: 3). As in the first section, they were able to settle back to 12: 7 bit by bit.
Now it was Karlitzek again who played in the foreground both in acceptance and attack. From 19:13 at the latest, nobody in the arena kept it on the seats. But when everyone got ready to cheer, the SVG players got their nerves, gave match balls and the sentence (27:29).
Good reaction from the Hübner team
How would the Hübner team react to the shock? Good and stable. The fourth round was balanced for a long time, but then the Lower Saxony set themselves decisively. At 24:18 the guests defended a match ball, but the next one was sitting, Xander Ketrzynski provided the first Bundesliga final of the club history-and the hall literally exploded.
