The concerns about the effects of pesticides on nature increase. That is why this year is the national project Measure the Mees started. This is being investigated which pesticides can be found in nature. Especially in non-finished eggs and dead young coal and blue tits that are found in their nest.
This is also participating in the Asserbos. Researchers not only look at the food that parent birds bring to the nest, but also at the materials with which the nests were built.
“English research shows that dog hair, often used as nesting material, can be harmful to young birds,” explains Herman Spoelstra of IVN Assen. “Many dog owners use anti -flea agents. These agents contain chemicals that, once in the nest, can have an adverse and sometimes even fatal effect on newborn birds.”
That is why litters are checked. The entire breeding season is monitored and the results go to the University of Leiden for further research.
