Mats Hummels’ career is coming to an end. The world champion has big plans – and is looking forward to a little more peace.
The Roma season ends only six games left – and Mats Hummels’ career. After around 18 years as a football professional, it is over. And Hummels already has big plans for the time afterwards. In his podcast “alone is difficult” he reveals: “I have cities that I absolutely want to visit. Sports, of course, of course. Australian Open. I don’t know if it will be in the first year, but it won’t take too long. Us open, tennis, the next Olympic Games, I want to see that live on site.” He also had an eye on the World Cup and EM, but added that “possibly a professional aspect”.
Hummels and his conversation partner then joked about this hint before the ex-international took this as an opportunity to get rid of something. “By the way, I am also looking forward to that I can finally post things in my kind on social media, without any people wanting to look and interpret something from it.“
What did he mean? “That with Nagelsmann, that’s really on my heart. (…) Last year, after I was not nominated (for the home European Championship, editor’s note), I cut one of the next units together, posted on Instagram and wrote training champion European champions. And I found: That was a Weltgag, I found him perfect,” said Hummels. “It was just this reference to European champions, I can’t be. Training world champion is such a self-criticism that you can do it in training, but not in the game. And I thought, just a beautiful, nice post. And then comes directly: ‘Nagelsmann criticism’.”
In fact, the post at the time had triggered some discussions, some fans and media considered it as a swipe or withdrawal against the national coach, who had not used to do so in the squad in the squad for the home European Championship. Apparently this was a misinterpretation.
In the future, Hummels’ posts can no longer be reinterpreted or regarded as an attack on anyone. “That I can still continue to bring my way, my humor, without anyone saying that this is now a criticism of the coach or this because I don’t have a coach. This is so nice,” said the 35-year-old.
