Eintracht Frankfurt’s big dream has burst. In the second leg of the Europa League quarter-finals, Frankfurt lost to Tottenham Hotspur. A penalty seals this.
Eintracht lost to Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday evening just 0: 1 (0: 1). Dominic Solanke scored the only goal of the evening with a penalty (43rd). After the 1-1 in the first leg, the Frankfurt Europa League trip ends. In the end, only one goal was missing, but the hosts could only conjure up danger too late.
You don’t have to say much about a quarter-final second leg in the Europa League. Do or the, exit or semi -finals, said everything. Nevertheless, since the first leg at Tottenham Hotspur, nothing was spoken about anything as much in Frankfurt a week ago and speculated as about this game. Productive rain and a martial choreography of the Eintracht fans formed the stage for everything that should come.
Dino Toppmöller it was clear that this was not the hour for experiments. He could not surprise the opponent with his starting eleven. It started the most powerful SGE team, the same players who were on the lawn a week ago in London. And they tried an over -the -end tactic. Jean-Mattéo Bahoya (3rd) and Mario Götze (5th) still radiated little danger with the first degrees of the evening, but a lot of determination. Goalkeeper Kaua Santos, who sent Ekitiké with a long blow, then did a top -class. The attacker somehow reached the ball, but was no longer a goal (16th).
Götzes evening ends abruptly
Elsewhere on the square occurred at the same time worrying. Mario Götze came to the back thigh, ran a few meters and then had to clear the field for Farès Chaibi. The world champion has been a pillar in Frankfurt’s game in the past few weeks. Now the Hesse had to do without the veteran. A big crack could not be seen afterwards. For a long time, Tottenham’s keeper Guglielmo Vicario did not have to undergo a real exam.
And Tottenham? Well, there was also a lot of pieces. The Londoners came to some corners, which, however, largely silently passed on. Mathys Tel. The former Bayern man for the offensive and this time at Tottenham in the initial formation, tested Kaua Santos with a bad conclusion from a good position (20th), from a distance (25th) and with a sharp flank (37th).
Kaua Santos clears Maddison
Then Frankfurt’s Brazilian keeper suddenly focused on the audience and referee interest. He stormed out of his box with her arms widespread and rated James Maddison quite ruthlessly. A serious crash. For Maddison, who had to end the game a few minutes later. For Eintracht because referee Davide Massa pointed to the point after studying video. Understandable. Solanke converted, Tottenham led (43.).
The hosts, especially Rasmus Kristensen, now tried to bring the stadium into play at every opportunity. After a foul by Brennan Johnson to Nathaniel Brown, Frankfurter Bank jumped around too wild. Assistant coach Jan Fießer saw red (45.+6).
Frankfurt to the front to the atmosphere
The hosts would have liked to bring a little more rapid and fire into the game. Alone, the ingredients were missing at first: Chaibi called with an attempt that only rushed past the post in memory that he understands very well on free kicks (51.). Basically, what the Toppmöller team was performing remained easy for Tottenham.
The best opportunity for the second round up until then resulted from one of the rare advances of the Verzecoglou team. As almost always with the guests, it went through a corner kick: Cristian Romero only headed past (61.). Tel also aimed again on Kaua Santos’ Kasten (66.).
No penalty for the SGE
In his own penalty area, Romero hit the ball during a rescue operation, but initially also Ekitiké (70th). However, this was obviously not enough for a second penalty. But now a spark ignited. The Eintracht focused on the final offensive. Chaibi with the tip of the foot and Kristensen from an acute angle had the chance to equalize twice within a few moments (76.). In general, Kristensen: the Dane now took it personally and cranked as much as possible. He should have met in a good position a little later (82nd), just aimed next to it, and shortly afterwards the ball did not hit properly (84.).
However, it remained with a lot of almost and approximate. Even in added time, Tottenham always found an answer on Frankfurt’s last desperate acts and is in the semi -finals. The Europa League season is over for Eintracht. One for the moment weak consolation: the Bundesliga is still about qualifying for Champions League.
