6 educational teams from higher professional education and scientific education have been nominated for the Dutch Higher Education Premium 2022, the prize for innovative higher education. In total there is € 5 million to be distributed. A team can receive a maximum of € 1.2 million. On Thursday 12 May 2022, Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf (Education, Culture and Science) will award the Dutch Higher Education Premiums.

The Dutch Higher Education Premium is a recognition for innovation in education at universities and colleges and is also intended as an important sign of appreciation for educational teams that deliver a top performance. It is also an incentive for teachers to continue working on educational innovation and knowledge sharing. The Dutch Higher Education Premiums were awarded for the first time last year.

‘I think it is important to highlight these top performances by teachers,’ says Minister Dijkgraaf. ‘Innovation and collaboration are just as important in education as they are in research. That is what I want to appreciate and encourage with this premium.’

Total 5 million available

With the Dutch Higher Education Premium, a total of € 5 million can be distributed annually, divided over 3 teaching teams from universities of applied sciences and 3 teaching teams from universities. The 6 nominated teams will receive €1.2 million, €800,000 or €500,000. Teams may use the amount of money won to make a special contribution to the renewal and/or improvement of higher education with an extraordinary project.

Nominated Education Teams

The 6 nominated education teams and their projects:

  • Inclusive Community Lab (NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences)

In this Lab, students and teachers from 8 different MBO and HBO programs work together with experts by experience and people from the professional field on creative solutions to the poverty problem. For example, it is being investigated why people with debts only turn to the Kredietbank if they have been in major financial problems for years.

  • Pulsed (Fontys University of Applied Sciences)

Pulsed is an interdisciplinary team within Fontys. It has set up various innovative initiatives in collaboration with social partners, companies and students, such as a program for students who drop out in the first 2 years after a wrong study choice.

  • Codarts Student Life program (Codarts Rotterdam, School of the Arts)

The Codarts Student Life program focuses on improving the physical and mental well-being of students in the performing arts. All first, second and third year students of the circus, music and dance courses participate in the program. The program has since been adopted by other organizations.

  • Amsterdam Law Practice (University of Amsterdam)

Through the Amsterdam Law Practice, lawyers learn to pay attention to their own role in law in relation to a complex society. They also learn to make a link between academic concepts and professional practice.

  • The Learning Mindset (Leiden University)

‘s team The Learning Mindset has developed a toolkit that integrates ‘journaling’ (a form of (structured written reflection such as in a diary) in the teaching of Leiden University College. With the toolkit, students learn to direct their learning process by actively and structured reflection.

  • Shaping Responsible Futures (Technical University of Twente)

the masterinsert Shaping Responsible Futures is an extracurricular program. Students from various study programs work in the Designlab on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary work on societal challenges.

Announcement May 12, 2022

On Thursday 12 May 2022, it will be announced which team of teachers will win which premium. This happens during the annual Comenius Festival of the ComeniusNetwork (educational innovation). Entries were judged by a jury led by Dr Marc van Mil of Utrecht University, who was named Lecturer of the Year in 2017.
