For Tika Svanidze Vanko, the new monument is mainly for the connection between the Netherlands and Georgia. “It has become wonderful. We want to show our gratitude to the Texelaars, the Dutch. The new monument now stands for the old one, we are not coming, we don’t want to destroy anything. Brushing away is certainly not the case.”
During the ‘Russians’, as the battle on Texel was called, the difference was not clear about all Soviet residents. That immediately caused two camps on the island. One was proud that the men dared to resist, the other accused the Georgians all the destruction, death and destruction that caused it.
Fallen men
“There are 481 Georgians and 4 North Caucasians here,” explains Ronald Keijser. “There has always been a dichotomy here on Texel, but this is still the crown. Without consultation, the monument has been set here, ten centimeters from the old one. A lot of people come here. It just can’t be explained.”
