After successful qualifications, the Kempener Daniel Altmaier also conquered the favorite Felix Auger-Aliasseime at the ATP tournament in Monte Carlo.
The top 20 player seems to be Altmaier. It was the second victory for the Kempener at the second meeting of the two tennis professionals. As in the previous year in Auckland (New Zealand), Altmaier ran down the Canadian in two sets.
Altmaier celebrates first Main round win after two Opening defeats
The 26-year-old German won the first round on Monday in Tie Break 7: 5. In the second set, Altmaier then had to prove his nerve strength when he served the match win at 5: 3, but left 0:40 despite his own surcharge. Number 84 in the world remained unimpressed, made five points in a row and thus decided on a sentence like Match.
Most recently, the German had lost in the first round at the ATP tournament in Marrakech (Morocco) against Otto Virtanen (Finland) and at Masters in Miami (USA) against Coleman Wong (Hong Kong), although his opponents were significantly worse in the world rankings. Altmaier had previously secured his place in the main field of the prestigious tournament on the Mediterranean coast in qualifying with victories against the Spaniard Jaume Munar (7: 5, 3: 6, 7: 5) and the French Pierre-Hugues Herbert (7: 6, 6: 3).
In contrast, Jan-Lennard Struff (Warstein) received the next early defeat in Monte Carlo. For him it was the fifth opening of the opening at an ATP tournament in a row. German number two lost in the opening round against Monegassen Valentin Vacherot in just 58 minutes with 1: 6, 2: 6. Vacherot had only moved into the main field with a wild card and lies in position 259 in the world rankings.
