Bayern Munich’s sports director Max Eberl has justified the highly debated decision on the end of Thomas Müller with a view to the future orientation of the record champions. The 51-year-old also admitted that he did not “clever” behave in the process of separating from the club icon.

“I know that we don’t get applause for this,” said Eberl at the TV station “Sport1”. Müller wanted “no folklore contract”. In the “Double Pass” football talk, Eberl described the way to the decision. It had nothing to do with the financial, and the sporting one was not “all that decisive,” explained Eberl. In the end it is about the future of FC Bayern. With a view to the squad planning and the structure of the team, the Müller party had been unanimously decided at the end of the season, the board and supervisory board.

At the beginning of the year, Eberl had sounded different: “He doesn’t have to negotiate great. If he says that he wants to keep going, then we will look deep into our eyes, take a look at the squad and then it will go on.” That sounded like a license for the 35-year-old miller. This is a “legend”. The decision himself also “gone extremely close,” said the sports director.

“There is a lot of reason for the statement. I was perhaps not so smart to say that. But at that moment I wasn’t smart because I was just emotional,” said Eberl, “because I couldn’t imagine a Bundesliga, a FC Bayern without Thomas Müller at this time.” Before the conversation with Müller in mid -March, he “slept for three days”. Müller and FC Bayern had made the end of the collaboration on Saturday.
