It is official: Thomas Müller will leave FC Bayern at the end of the season. This was announced by the ex-international on Saturday morning on Instagram. His contract with the German record champions will not be extended.
“After a lot has been speculated about my person, I would like to take the opportunity to make clarity with this letter to you,” the 35-year-old begins his post. Even after so many years, he was “still a lot of fun to stand on the pitch with the boys and fight together for our colors for titles. I could have imagined this role well next year.”
But: “However, the association consciously decided not to negotiate a new contract for the next season with me.” He wanted another decision, but: “I respect this step that the board and supervisory board must not be easy.”
Müller continues: “I feel the appreciation for my long time at FC Bayern and I feel deeply joy in having an incredibly intensive years for my heart club. I will be connected to FC Bayern and with you forever through so many great moments.”
The 2014 world champion came to Bayern in 2000, the youth stations went through before he gave his Bundesliga debut in the 2008/09 season. Under the then coach Jürgen Klinsmann, the attacker was substituted for Miroslav Klose on the 2: 2 against Hamburger SV on the 2: 2 against Hamburger SV.
An unprecedented success story followed: with the Bayern, Müller won the Champions League (2013 and 2020) twice, has so far been twelve times German champion (more often than any other Bundesliga player), six times DFB Cup winner. With over 700 competitive games, Müller is also a record player of Bayern.
“Now the full focus is on our sporting seasonal goals,” writes Müller at the end of his post. And reveals with a view to the possible titles in the Bundesliga and Champions League: “It would be a dream for me to bring the master bowl back home and reach the longed for Dahoam at the end of May. I will give everything for that!”
