NATO through the Netherlands tour will be settled in a number of cities in the coming months. This happens in the run-up to the NATO summit on 24 and 25 June in The Hague. The organization wants to enter into a conversation with the public with all kinds of activities about safety and NATO. Part of this traveling program are the Educational Theatermakers De Kiesmen. Today they were in Boxmeer where they had conversations with young people from the ROC Nijmegen. Major General Wilfred Rietdijk was a guest.

The Bureau De Kiesmen and the Atlantic Commission developed an interactive MBO lesson program. With that they will travel through the country in the coming months. In total, the makers visit more than 100 schools. The program is funded by the Ministry of Defense.

Why is the Netherlands organizing the NATO summit this year? What does international safety mean for daily life? During the program, the students are invited to think about these types of questions. In Boxmeer they discussed this with the electors and Major General Wilfred Rietdijk. Among other things, there were questions about the role of America within NATO and the motive of the general to work at Defense.

After Nijmegen, NATO will also visit Groningen, Eindhoven, Utrecht and The Hague through the Netherlands tour in the coming months. Another part of the Tour is a serious gaming ‘e-sports tournament’ from Defense. There is also a mobile photo exhibition about NATO from Foreign Affairs. In addition, a theater tour and teaching programs of the Atlantic Commission are part of this. These are intended for middle and MBO schools. Clingendael and The Hague Center of Strategic Studies (HCSS) make a contribution with research and debate.

Other parties that contribute are the Haagsch College, young Atlantics and the child correspondent. Continue The Hague International Model United Nations (Thimun) and veteran in front of the class are part of the Tour. Universities, colleges and a number of municipalities also participate.

About the electors

The electors is a creative agency that is committed to social innovation. It makes productions to involve young people in social themes, such as elections and democracy. The electors do that with a mix of education and theater. With racks, examples and conversations, the electors make difficult themes understandable and relevant.
