VfL Wolfsburg actually has the goal of Europe in view. But at the weekend there was a bitter damper. There could be changes in summer.
The contract of coach Ralph Hasenhüttl at VfL Wolfsburg is still valid until 2026. But whether the Austrian can fulfill it seems to be open. Because as the “kicker” reports on Monday, “the voices” are increasing that managing director Peter Christiansen wants to go a different way in summer.
The 57-year-old has been in office at Wolfsburg for a year, lasted the “wolves” in the league last season and was to lead the club to Europe this year. This is still possible, but the disappointing appearance on Saturday against relegation candidate Heidenheim (0: 1) gave the goal a bitter damping.
Managing Director Christensen avoided a commitment after the game, only said: “I am too long in this business to talk about such topics at the present time. We are in a crucial phase in which we have to bundle our strength to successfully finish the season.”
Sports director Sebastian Schindzielorz rather took on the team: “No matter which staff is on the pitch: You can already expect VfL Wolfsburg to get everything in and everyone try to get the best out. Somehow you had the feeling that the last grains were missing a bit.”
He also added: “In any case, we can’t go on – that’s clear. This is an absolutely disappointing day for us.”
Above all, the trend in home games is worried. In the meantime, however, the team has been winning for five home games in the Bundesliga. Against none of the four relegation candidates Holstein Kiel (2: 2), VfL Bochum (1: 1), FC St. Pauli (1: 1) and Heidenheim (0: 1), VfL has won at home in recent months.
