Transport company Arriva receives 89 million euros extra compensation due to the delay of the De Maaslijn project, which must improve the track between Roermond and Nijmegen. The route that also runs through Brabant includes the Cuijk, Boxmeer and Vierlingsbeek stations.
The province of Limburg and the Ministry of Infrastructure each pay half of the compensation amount. The transport company already received 49 million euros in 2020 because the intended electrification – so that electric trains can run on the route – and partially doubled the track. The objective of the project is a more reliable timetable for travelers.
According to the province of Limburg, work is currently running energetically, but there is a chance that the project will not be completed until the end of 2028. Originally the delivery date was planned at the end of 2020, later this became 2024. The war in Ukraine and Covid caused a delay in the project.
The extra money that Arriva now receives is intended for the long -term storage and the maintenance of electric trains that have already been purchased and the additional price for the longer use of diesel trains.
